I’ve finally completed Call of Juarez: The Cartel and it was a somewhat painful experience. I quickly got bored of the story line as the scripts for the characters seemed to be out of sync (if that makes sense) and to be honest, very annoying.
In the single player campaign there are 3 main characters allowing for a 3 player co-op session. I had actually played a few missions on co-op and whilst we made our own fun (teabagging the bad guys) we simply found ourselves burning time playing this game.
I liked the 3 player co-op feature. Each character had their own side stories usually given via a telephone call. Each player didn’t know what the other player’s phone call was about or what side mission was given but we had to catch each in the act of trying to complete the side mission, it was usually by finding collectables dotted throughout the campaign.
Each character has their own specialisation when it comes to weapons so different guns are made available and are unlocked as you rank up in levels. The weapons were fun to use but with aim assist on it made things a little too easy. For example, I used dual pistols and without actually aiming I was killing off bad guys like there was no tomorrow.
I decided to start the game at Hard difficulty but I rarely found myself being challenged that I couldn’t progress to the next save point. Unlike Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, hard difficulty actually meant hard.
The on-line multi-player was very strange. The controls seemed very quirky but it was somewhat confusing as to what was actually going on and that was with team death match. I think if a number of friends played the on-line together then a laugh could be had but that probably wouldn’t last too long. I decided to give the on-line matches another chance but unfortunately after waiting for 30 minutes in the lobby only 1 other player seemed to join, is the game dead already?
If like me, you enjoyed Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood then The Cartel is probably going to be a huge disappointment. Most players seemed to like the Western style of Call of Juarez but unfortunately that has now been removed with this game, you can’t even call this a modern Western.
Unfortunately I recommend not buying this game at full price as it’s simply not worth it. If you can get it on the cheap (pre-owned) then give it a whirl if you need to pass some time.
